Dentist
Preventative maintenance and dental health education are the primary responsibilities of a dentist. They examine teeth and gums, and treat any discovered injuries or diseases. If stronger treatments are necessary, they will make recommendations and/or referrals to assist their patients.
Pediatric Dentist
Responsible for the same procedures as regular dentists, pediatric dentists focus on patients ranging in age from newly born to late adolescence. They must be knowledgeable of all standard practices, as well as the characteristics of children. Extensive formal education is mandatory for these careers.
Oral/Maxillofacial Surgeon
By reviewing and interviewing patients and their dental history, oral surgeons determine the need for surgery, and make necessary preparations for the procedures. They operate in order to correct injuries, diseases, deformities, or improve patient appearance or functionality. Immense knowledge of dental practices, procedures, and techniques is mandatory for these physicians.
Endodontist
As highly specialized professionals, endodontists repair damage sustained to the interior pulp of teeth. They remove inflamed or infected tissues, clean the canals, and then fill the tooth with a sealer to prevent further damage. Their services are generally needed when cracks, decay, or infection damage the interior tissues.
Orthodontist
Often familiar with many aspects of dentistry, orthodontists specialize in correcting tooth and oral structure malformations. With the use of equipment such as braces, spacers, and/or retainers, they improve the overall appearance of patients’ teeth
Periodontist
Periodontists focus on the health and maintenance of the structures that support the teeth. They commonly work with diseases of the gums, jaws, root cementum, and periodontal ligament. Diseases are generally related to bacterial infections affecting the gums, but can be any disorder related to these structures.
Prosthodontist
Major aesthetic or reconstructive dental procedures mandate more qualified practitioners. Prosthodontists are needed for restoring arches, replacing numerous teeth, correcting functional problems, and all major aesthetic changes. These professionals are educated beyond general dentists, and must perform detailed and intricate procedures.
Oral Surgery Assistant
There are a number of responsibilities associated with being an oral surgery assistant. These professionals ready instruments and pass them to the surgeon during treatment, prepare injections, process dental material, sterilize and disinfect needed equipment, and complete various clerical duties.
Dental Sales Representative
A thorough knowledge of all dental practices and procedures is necessary for success as a dental sales representative. Candidates must travel to dentists’ offices to increase company sales by promoting dental products. They must be able to discover clients’ needs and advertise products to ensure customer satisfaction.
Practice Administrator
In private dental offices, practice administrators report directly to the dentist, but in many small practices, dentists may assume these roles themselves. Responsibilities include inventory maintenance, budget preparation and maintenance, employee scheduling, and wages/benefits packages. Exceptional organizational skills are necessary for these positions.
Dental Assistant
Often accompanying dentists for routine and scheduled procedures, dental assistants are responsible for ensuring rooms and proper utensils are prepared. They maintain detailed records and work under the supervision of a dentist. They often hand dentists necessary tools and assist as needed during treatment.
Dental Hygienist
With the use of numerous specialized instruments, dental hygienists clean deposits and stains from teeth and below the gums. In order to improve dental hygiene knowledge, they may educate children and adults in schools or community centers. They work directly under a dentist’s supervision, and they must check for any visual signs of major health issues.
Dental Lab Technician
Working with materials such as wax, plaster, porcelain, metal, and acrylic, dental lab technicians create permanent and temporary fixtures. Based off of measurements given by dentists, they work in labs creating crowns, bridges, and retainers. Training and knowledge of technical instruments is pertinent for this occupation.
Office Manager
To maintain organization and fluidity within the administrative office, managers create and implement necessary procedures and policies for basic office duties. They supervise office personnel and handle any issues that may arise during daily activities.
Dental Receptionist
Responsible for many basic office duties, the dental receptionist handles incoming calls and patients, gathers necessary information, files documents, and directs patients to proper areas. They must be personable and have excellent communication skills and work within pre established systems and guidelines.
